BIOGRAPHY

German tenor Werner Güra, born in Munich, received his musical training at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. He completed his vocal studies with Professor Kurt Widmer in Basel and with Professor Margreet Honig in Amsterdam and developed his acting talent with Ruth Berghaus and Theo Adam. His present coach is Nicolai Gedda.
After guesting at the operahouses of Frankfurt and Basel he joined in 1995 the ensemble of the Semperoper Dresden. As from the season 1998/99, Werner Güra also sings regularly at the Staatsoper Berlin.
From the start of his professional career, Werner Güra aimed to divide his activities equally between opera and concert. He has worked with many orchestras on the main European concert stages, and made numerous radio recordings of concerts and songrecitals. His repertoire includes the oratorios by Mendelssohn, Britten's Horn Serenade and the Bach Passions (Evangelist and arias), which he has sung with a.o. Peter Schreier, Trevor Pinnock, Philippe Herreweghe, René Jacobs, Ton Koopman. He participated at the Festivals of Montpellier (Franz Schmidt's Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln and Beethoven's Leonore with Friedemann Layer), Saintes and Salzburg (Elias with Philippe Herreweghe) and Montreux. He toured in Japan with Beethoven's 9th Symphony (Philippe Herreweghe) and appeared in the Konzerthaus Vienna (Haydn’s Schöpfung with Adam Fischer).
Werner Güra is also very much appreciated as Lied interpreter and gives recitals amongst others in the London Wigmore Hall, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Lincoln Center New York, at the Barcelona Schubertiade and the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg.
