BIOGRAPHY

Founded in 1952, the Munich Radio Orchestra has evolved into an ensemble with a huge artistic spectrum over its more than 60-year history. Concertante opera performances at its Sunday concerts and the series Paradisi gloria with sacred music of the 20th and 21st century form part of its activities, as do concerts for children and young people, entertaining themed concerts under the motto “Wednesday at half-past seven” and performances of film music.

The previous principal conductors of the Munich Radio Orchestra were Werner Schmidt-Boelcke, Kurt Eichhorn, Heinz Wallberg, Lamberto Gardelli, Giuseppe Patané, Roberto Abbado and Marcello Viotti. Since 2006, Ulf Schirmer has been the artistic director, setting new focuses with a programme that includes premières of commissioned works in the series Paradisi gloria, along with interesting rediscoveries in the field of opera and operetta.

The Munich Radio Orchestra is also intensively involved in supporting young talent, one example being its collaboration with the August Everding Theatre Academy, which started in 2006.

The Munich Radio Orchestra also regularly makes guest appearances, at which it has worked with artists such as Edita Gruberová, Andreas Scholl and Fazil Say. At the Salzburg Festival, it accompanied Anna Netrebko, Plácido Domingo, Elina Garanca and Juan Diego Flórez.
