BIOGRAPHY

Ulf Schirmer has been artistic director of the Munich Radio Orchestra since September 2006, exploring a wide range of repertoire: from operetta, opera, melodrama and film music to sacred music of the 20th/21st century in the series Paradisi gloria, which also provides a platform for premières of commissioned works. On CD, Ulf Schirmer and the Munich Radio Orchestra have brought out top-class portraits of singers, as well as complete operetta recordings in connection with his Lehár cycle and rare repertoire items such as Lortzing's opera Regina and Walter Braunfels' Verkündigung. Since taking up the position, Ulf Schirmer has also maintained a collaboration between the Munich Radio Orchestra and the August Everding Theatre Academy, putting on a staged opera production each season – most recently Salomé by Antonie Mariotte.

Ulf Schirmer was born in Eschenhausen, near Bremen. He studied at the Conservatory in Bremen and at the Musikhochschule in Hamburg with György Ligeti, Christoph von Dohnányi and Horst Stein. He gathered important experiences as the assistant of Lorin Maazel and resident conductor at the Vienna State Opera. Later, he was general music director in Wiesbaden and principal conductor of the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Regular guest performances have taken him to the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the New National Theatre in Tokyo and to the Bregenz Festival. He has stood at the conducting desk of the Vienna and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and the NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo.

In 2000 he became Professor of Musical Analysis and Music Dramaturgy at the Hamburg Musikhochschule. Since 2009 he has been general music director at the Leipzig Opera, becoming its director as well in 2011.
